After I read the chapter on decision making, I realized that I was not as good a decision maker as I could have been. I put off making decisions because I don't think I knew how to make the decision.
I had a customer who was complaining about a product performance problem, but I also had to get a product enhancement ready for launch. I also had some 'new' priorities, courtesy of my boss. I found out that I wanted to make too many people happy, so I made a decision matrix! I used Steven's suggestion and identified all of my options, ranked them, and then asked a colleague for help in putting options into perspective.
Afterwards, I presented these to my boss. She was really receptive and said that by my putting these decision options into the right perspective, I was able to do two things:
1) get her help in pushing back on the customer, who's issue could be addressed by a technical repair person
2) I was able to push back on some of the things she was asking me to do, and finally,
I got to spend the right amount of time on the most critical project.
Maybe it's not rocket science, but if you feel overwhelmed, perhaps you can put things into perspective by using a simple decision making technique. Thank's Steven! |
